Reading More, Talking Less

I’ve actually made a daily resolution to read more this year. Why? If you have to ask that question then you’re probably in the wrong place. There are countless reasons why everyone should read more. That’s a given. For me though, I need to remember that reading is fun. Not just something that comes as a result of reading reports or business books. Or that skimming through articles on Flipboard, no matter how interesting and diverse they may be, really counts. Most importantly, reading goes hand in hand with writing.

I’ve decided not to be too ambitious. I could, in theory, read a book a week. I read fairly speedily so that’s not really the issue. It’s carving out that time. I know that if I think I’ll be able to conjure up a free 5-7 hours just because it is the new year then I’m delusional. That is setting myself up to fail really quickly. I’m hoping instead that by keeping track of what I have read and being intentional about doing at least 15 minutes every day, that once I actually sit down to read I’ll keep going. Rather than just chatting on the phone or watching brilliant – but mindless – TV shows.

First down, The Burning Room by Michael Connelly. One of my favourite authors and a gift for Christmas (the book, not the man), it seemed a sensible place to start. I already feel better for adding the first entry to the list, as well as learning more about pace and long term characterisation.

So, what are your reading goals for 2015?
